“Who is Jesus?” The present study seeks to offer new insights into this question within the context of salvation, but without dealing expressly with the Redemption and its problems which the author has discussed elsewhere.
The task of speculative Christology has become more arduous with the growing number of exegetical works and historical studies of the doctrinal development of Tradition. The theologian, confronted with a vast array of publications, must try to retain all valid contributions to the state of the art, while seeking to clarify his own thinking on the Scriptural sources and on their interpretation within the Church. He may be strongly tempted to limit his perspective to the views presented in a few specialized studies, while neglecting the others. But Christological thought cannot be reduced to a one-sided or less than complete approach. It must embrace all that has been revealed of Christ. While relying on the results of solid research, it can never renounce its own efforts toward a more perfect synthesis.
Now, it is such a synthesis we are striving for here. After pointing out the general orientation and methodological problems of Christology, we shall consider the Scriptural sources, then give a brief overview of Patristical thought together with the Christological formulations of the Councils, and finally discuss the various speculative problems posed by the ontology and psychology of Christ.
Part 1. The orientation of Christological reseach
Part 2. The essential features of the scriptural sources
Part 3. The fundamental affirmations of the faith of the church
Part 4. The ontology of the Incarnation
Part 5. The psychology of Christ
