“Who do people say that I am?” is a question associated with Jesus as early as the first Gospel to be written. In that Gospel it produced a variety of answers (Mark 8:27–33), including one volunteered but poorly understood by Peter, his best known follower. The question has produced a variety of answers ever since, and in our own times books evaluating Jesus philosophically, theologically, or biblically may average a half dozen a year. Many of the biblical studies are of frightening complexity as scholars debate the meaning and origin of every pertinent verse or half-verse of the New Testament (henceforth NT).

In this book I have no intention of engaging in the details of those technical debates or of proposing new solutions (or, a fortiori, of discussing modern christologies), for I am not writing a contribution to be read primarily by scholars. There is no attempt to cover exhaustively the abundant literature on christology, biblical or theological; bibliography will be kept to a practical minimum and confined to works in English. The book is addressed to a broad range of people interested in the Bible, whether they read it by themselves or are enrolled in study groups, college courses, or a beginning theology program.

My goal is to enable all such readers to understand the issues and why there is a debate, and thus to gain the biblical background to read further and reflect with discrimination on modern proposals. Inevitably some sections of it will be more difficult than others—I think particularly of Chapter 4 and APPENDIX III with their treatment of individual passages—but, conscious of that, I have made it possible to follow the general argument of the book if one chooses to skip those difficult sections. In short and emphatically, this book is introductory.
Part I. The meaning of Christology and different approaches
Part II. The Christology of Jesus
Part III. The Christology of New Testament Christians
