Our purpose in writing this book is to provide the reader with some basic concepts in logic as a preparation for further studies in philosophy. We have put together in one volume the subject matter covered in formal logic (the study of the forms of logical reasoning) and material logic (the study of the philosophical foundation of the forms of reasoning). We did not consider a study devoted exclusively to formal logic adequate to the objective we had in mind.
This is also the reason why we have decided to use a vocabulary taken from ordinary language to explain the subject matter, instead of one replete with symbols. Mathematical logic is an independent science that involves highly technical explanations, preferably adapted to the study of formal calculus. Our concern is of another nature, more related to the understanding of philosophy. This does not mean that the topics we shall deal with have no relation with symbolic logic; they do have a relation, as we shall point out in the course of our study.
It is our hope that the book serve its pedagogical purpose, and that the reader find it a good introduction to the study of logic in the light of metaphysical principles.
